Identity & life change

When life changes, it can leave you unsure not only about what comes next, but about who you are now.

What may be happening underneath the surface?

Our sense of identity often becomes tied to the roles we have occupied for many years - partner, parent, professional, carer, provider, achiever, or the person other people rely on. When one of those roles changes or disappears, it can expose deeper questions that may previously have been hidden beneath the busyness of everyday life:

  • Who am I without this role?

  • What matters to me now?

  • What do I actually want?

The inner critic may respond to this uncertainty with self-doubt, comparison, or the feeling that you should already know what comes next, but this stage of life is not necessarily about having immediate answers. It can be about beginning to listen more carefully to yourself.

Separation, bereavement, illness, burnout, children leaving home, relationship changes, relocation, or a change of career can alter the shape of life very quickly. Even when change is expected or chosen, it can unsettle your sense of identity, direction, and belonging. The difficulty is often not only the event itself, but the loss of a familiar role, structure, or way of understanding yourself. The person who is needed, successful, busy, responsible, or certain of their place may suddenly feel less recognisable. This can be a disorientating place to find yourself. But it can also become an opportunity to listen more closely to the question beneath the change:

"Who am I now?"

How can I help?

I can help you explore who you are beyond the roles, expectations, and patterns that may have shaped your life for many years. Together, we can look at how your identity became tied to being needed, achieving, coping, pleasing others, or fulfilling particular responsibilities. From there, the work can help you reconnect with your own values, strengthen self-trust, and develop a clearer sense of what matters to you now. The aim is not simply to find a new activity or purpose. It is to help you build a stronger relationship with yourself and make choices that feel more genuinely your own.

You may recognise some of this.

  • You no longer feel quite like the person you used to be

  • You you have more freedom or time, but less sense of direction.

  • A role that once gave you your life's structure or meaning has changed or disappeared.

  • You find yourself wondering what actually matters to you now.

  • Part of you wants something different, but you are not yet sure what that is.

  • You sometimes wonder whether you have spent years living according to other people's expectations rather than your own

What can begin to change?

Over time, the aim is to help you feel less defined by the roles you have lost or outgrown and more connected to the person you are becoming, you can begin to feel clearer about your values, more confident in your own choices, and less dependent on external approval or old expectations. The work can help you develop a stronger sense of identity, greater self-trust, and a clearer understanding of what you want the next stage of your life to be about.

Ready to talk?

You do not need to know exactly what you want your next chapter to look like before you get in touch. If life has changed and you no longer feel quite sure who you are or where you are going, we can begin by making sense of that together.
